The Egyptian Expedition 2027 is a journey of around three weeks through Egypt, starting in mid-March 2027, in your own car. We begin in Alexandria and Cairo, with the new Grand Egyptian Museum, the pyramids of Giza and Saqqara. Then the asphalt ends: four to six nights in the Western Desert, through the White Desert and the dunes of the Passage des Fous, with Paul Lombard leading the way in the sand. Off-road to the south, past the Toshka Lakes, we reach the temples of Abu Simbel and Aswan.

From Aswan you sail for three nights on a luxury Nile cruise to Luxor, past Kom Ombo, Edfu, the Valley of the Kings and Karnak, while your cars travel ahead by transport. We then cross the Eastern Desert to the Red Sea for two days of rest, before driving along the coast to the finish in Cairo. Around 23 nights and roughly 3,000 kilometres, with a small group, a CarChallenge support car all the way and every detail arranged in advance.

The car

The Egyptian Expedition 2027 can only be driven with a 4WD that is ready for sand: good ground clearance, underbody protection, all-terrain tyres and a compressor. Think of a Land Rover Defender or similar.

If you need advice or support in preparing your car, we are happy to assist. From guidance on the right setup to trusted partners who can help get your vehicle ready, we can connect you with the right expertise.

Accommodation

During The Egyptian Expedition the route always comes first. In Alexandria, Cairo, Aswan and on the Red Sea we stay in carefully chosen hotels; in Cairo, for example, with a view of the pyramids.

In the desert the organisation sets up camp and you sleep in Bedouin tents, far from everything. On the Nile you spend three nights on board.

Into the Western Desert

For four to six nights there is no road. From Cairo we drive into the dunes of Abu Muharik, past the Djara cave and through the Passage des Fous, between table mountains and high dunes, to the Roman ruins of Umm el-Dabadib and the oasis of Kharga. Food, water, fuel and camp are all taken care of; in the sand you drive with Paul Lombard and our local partner.
