Part 1 will open on the Caspian shore in Aktau, Kazakhstan. The route will lead through the steppe into Turkmenistan: past the jagged rock colours of Yangykala Canyon and on to the marble, almost surreal setting of Ashgabat, while at night the Darvaza gas crater burns like an open wound in the desert.

At Khiva the convoy will enter Uzbekistan — a walled world of clay, minarets and courtyards. Then come Bukhara and Samarkand: names that carry their reputation with ease. Here the Silk Road becomes tangible.

From Dushanbe the mythical Pamir Highway will carry the convoy above four thousand meters, before Kyrgyzstan opens up with valleys, horses, yurts and mountain lakes — via Bishkek to Almaty for a brief moment of rest and maintenance.

At Khorgos comes one of the great transitions of the journey: the border with China. Along the foot of the Tian Shan and across the Nalati grasslands the convoy will drive to the old caravan city of Kashgar. Via the Karakoram Highway and over the Khunjerab Pass the route will then descend into Pakistan — Attabad Lake, Karimabad and villages that seem glued to the slopes. After the Babusar Pass and the pine forests of Nathia Gali comes Lahore, and the Wagah border ceremony will frame the crossing into India. At the Golden Temple of Amritsar the journey pauses one last time, before the finish flag flies in New Delhi.

The car

A capable 4×4 is required. Think Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Discovery, Toyota Hilux, or similar. Essential items include adequate ground clearance, underbody protection, quality all-terrain tires, two spare wheels, a compressor, and a VHF radio; helpful extras include a dual-battery system, a fridge, tablet mount, and additional USB power. All modifications are documented so any mechanic knows what sits where. Technical support will be on the road, border assistance is arranged, and the goal is simple: everyone reaches the finish.

Accommodation

We select and personally inspect hotels for location and calm before departure; dinners and breakfasts are included on driving days, and in larger stops you can dine independently with recommendations provided and costs reimbursed to keep the experience simple. Where the route enters very remote areas, expect a few simpler nights that trade luxury for access and atmosphere.

Far East Part 2

From New Delhi await the colours of Rajasthan — Jodhpur blue, Jaipur pink — and the marble white of the Taj Mahal. The route will head south past Udaipur, Mumbai and the beaches of Goa, then via Mysore, Kochi and the temples of Madurai to the finish in Chennai — home well before Christmas.
