The Middle East Challenge 2027 takes participants on a rare overland journey through Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Starting in Alexandria or Aqaba, the route follows the Nile past Giza and Luxor, crosses the Sinai Peninsula, and continues through Petra and Wadi Rum before entering Saudi Arabia. From the Red Sea coast to Medina and the Empty Quarter, each stage blends precise driving with cultural discovery. Ancient temples, desert crossings, and evenings spent in remarkable hotels or beneath the stars.

In true CarChallenge style, every route is scouted in advance and every detail carefully arranged. A limited number of participants travel with full technical support and local expertise, combining comfort with adventure. The journey ends in Oman’s Dhofar region, where monsoon rains turn the desert green — a fitting finale to one of the most diverse routes ever designed by CarChallenge.

The car

The Middle East Challenge from Alexandria to Salalah can only be driven with a 4WD. Think of a Land Rover Defender or similar.

During The Middle East the route always comes first. Along the way we select the best available hotels. In cities or on rest days – for example in Cairo or Petra – you can expect memorable, carefully chosen stays.

In more remote areas, where the focus is on the landscape and the driving experience, accommodations may be simpler. The balance ensures comfort without compromising the essence of the journey.

Crossing the Empty Quarter

Then begins the Rub’ al-Khali (Empty Quarter), one of the largest sand deserts in the world. Several days of dunes, without asphalt. It’s a logistical challenge to set up luxury tents and camp in the middle of nowhere. Surprisingly, water and greenery can also be found in the Empty Quarter.
