We set out from Amsterdam with a convoy of convertibles and drove east across Ukraine and Russia into Kazakhstan’s steppe, then through the Altai and the Gobi to Ulaanbaatar. Special stages covered the rougher sections in Kazakhstan and Mongolia, with extra 4×4 support and a sweep car, while navigation ran on our roadbook and daily briefings kept the pace measured.
